Grow Your Tech Career in Ireland With Retail inMotion

There are few better places to sip a coffee than 30,000 feet in the air. Next time you’re on a plane though, take a moment to consider how that cup made it into your hands. It’s quite likely that Irish company Retail inMotion had something to do with it.

Founded in 2004, the company has since shaken up the aviation retail space with a pioneering range of technology and products. In that time, they’ve grown a global customer base and seen rapid expansion. “In the last 12 months, our tech team has doubled in size,” says CIO, Cian O’Cuinneagain. “We’ve gone from 75 employees to about 150 today.”

The company is currently hiring for some fascinating tech roles in its Dublin offices; we caught up with the team to find out more.

Tech Taking Flight

Although you may not have heard of them until now, the tech department at Retail inMotion has been responsible for developments that have revolutionised the aviation industry. “We were the first company to bring to market a point of sales solution for airlines that can handle offline payments via a smartphone – which is extremely tricky,” Cian explains proudly.

And the group has no plans to stop innovating. There are plans afoot for more personalisation, pre-flight ordering, and tech that allows passengers to use their own device. All in all, lots of interesting dev projects to get stuck into.

If data is more your style, there’s plenty going on in this space too. The company offers an end-to-end solution to its clients, which means the team there handles product development and logistics too. “We have a lot of valuable data and insight that we can give to the customer, and use to enhance the experience for both crew and passenger,” says Cian. “We’re starting to build in the logic around prediction too; predicting more effectively what we should have on board.”

A Great Place to Work

Retail inMotion has scooped a covetable ‘Great Place to Work’ award for two years in a row, and it’s not hard to see why. One of the things that sets the company apart is that employees here can truly have an impact. “We’re growing all the time, and people really seem to enjoy that,” says Stephanie, who heads up the HR department. “We’re still at a stage that you can come in and have influence really, really fast.”

If you’re moving from another country, you can be sure of a warm welcome from the team. “Our large HR department means we can really support people when they’re moving to the country,” Stephanie explains. “We give them a special welcome pack that contains information on anything and everything they might need – from renting a house and mobile phone providers, to getting their social security number set up. There’s also someone available to chat to about anything they need as they go along.”

The company offers a host of other employee benefits too, including health insurance, maternity and paternity top-ups, and 27 days annual leave. “We also have an amazing canteen for just €1 a day. It’s a very communal thing; people don’t go off for lunch in groups. You just go down whenever you feel like it and chat to everyone.”
