The Growing Irish Tech Scene – Why Not be a Part of it?

Are you working in tech and toying with the idea of a new adventure? Playfully referred to as the ‘Silicon Valley of Europe’, Ireland offers the chance to grow your career while retaining an excellent quality of life. If you’re interested in finding out more about opportunities in Ireland’s tech scene, we are holding an exclusive event and conference in London on the 10th of February: Tech/Life Ireland 404. Ireland’s top tech employers will be in attendance, so you can get the lowdown direct from them about your career prospects here. Two such companies are HubSpot and Zendesk. Ahead of the event, they gave us the lowdown on why relocating to Ireland could be an incredibly smart move – not just for your career, but for your life too.

It’s All Happening at HubSpot

HubSpot is a marketing sales and growth platform. Their Dublin office employs nearly 400 staff and they’re always on the lookout for new talent. The company’s Inbound Recruiting Manager, Hannah Fleishman, explains: “At HubSpot, our mission is for the companies we work with to grow better, and for this to happen we also need to grow better ourselves. We have 15 roles currently open on the engineering team including iOS Developer, Senior Tech Lead and Director of Engineering. Each of our products has a dedicated team of around 5-8 people, which means everyone is truly invested in what they’re working on. Some of the new products we’re currently working on include one based around customer acquisition.”

A Collaborative Tech Scene

So, what’s so exciting about the tech scene in Ireland? Hannah says: “The tech scene here is very collaborative and when you meet people throughout the industry in Dublin they’re very passionate about the projects they’re working on. If you’re looking for a new challenge, the tech scene here is growing and there’s so much opportunity. And the weather’s not as bad as you think!”

A Culture of Trust

At HubSpot, it’s not just about ping pong tables or bean bag chairs – although they have those too –  It’s about trusting their staff and allowing them to be flexible. “We place an importance on creating an environment where it’s possible for our staff to make an impact on the things they do every-day,” Hannah notes. “It doesn’t matter where you need to work or how many hours you clock in – it’s about the output.” You can read more about HubSpot’s attractive culture code here.

Get Your Work/Life Balance Back at Zendesk

Another company who will be attending the 404 London event are Zendesk, whose European headquarter offices are located in the heart of Dublin. We caught up with Lead Technical Recruiter Robert O’Donoghue to find out about Zendesk’s place in Ireland’s thriving tech scene.

Zendesk is a cloud-based customer service platform that builds software to create better customer relationships. Their overarching aim is to help improve communication and the team in Dublin are constantly working to build products that are highly scalable and easy to use. Robert explains: “We are doing pure product development here, with talk and mobile applications being built from scratch.” The company are currently recruiting for a broad variety of roles, he notes: “At the moment we have roles available in software engineering, product management, UX/UI design and technical support, to name but a few.”

It’s the People that Make the Company

For Robert, it really is the employees that make Zendesk what it is. “It might sound cheesy but it’s true!” he says. “We have over 25 nationalities in the Dublin office and it’s a highly collaborative, fun and flexible environment.” To make that environment even more attractive, Zendesk organise a range of different events and knowledge-sharing sessions for their employees. Robert explains: “We have brown bag sessions where we’ll get guest speakers to come in and do talks on their area of expertise. People find them really inspiring.” On the lighter side, the company also holds social events like Cocktail Hour on Fridays and regular Lego Nights. Yes, Lego. Can it get any better?

No Sign of Stopping

The rapid growth in the industry has proved incredibly compelling for the people involved in recent years. Robert explains: “The Irish tech scene is booming, and it’s been completely embraced by the community. It’s very exciting to be a part of it.”
