Building the Future with Node
October 20, 2017
Few events showcase the vast reach of Ireland’s tech community better than the annual NodeConf EU. Now in its fifth year, the Kilkenny based gathering of Node.js developers, fans and masterminds is more popular than ever. And it’s never been more relevant to the global tech community – with Uber, Microsoft, Netflix and Conde Nast just some of the well-brands currently using the technology.
Set to kick off on November 5th in the heart of Kilkenny, Paul Savage of nearForm gave us a sneak preview of this year’s conference. Read on for a taste of the action to come.
Connect with Community
Few events showcase the vast reach of Ireland’s tech community better than the annual NodeConf EU. Now in its fifth year, the Kilkenny based gathering of Node.js developers, fans and masterminds is more popular than ever. And it’s never been more relevant to the global tech community – with Uber, Microsoft, Netflix and Conde Nast just some of the well-brands currently using the technology.
Set to kick off on November 5th in the heart of Kilkenny, Paul Savage of nearForm gave us a sneak preview of this year’s conference. Read on for a taste of the action to come.
Developing New Learnings
With Node.js run as an open-source technology, the conference is a chance for the community to share ideas and swap learnings.
“When anyone in the world builds Node.js code that code runs on an open source platform, it’s called Node.js Core,” Paul explains.
“So, we run build & learn sessions where we will be getting people to train up and learn how to make contributions to this Node.js Core code. This is a hugely important part of developing and maintaining this technology.”
“Here in nearForm, we actually play an additional role in developing this,” he continues. “Every new piece of code uploaded has to be checked thoroughly by a second person before it can be included on the Node core platform, and one-third of all the new code that was created for this last year across the world was checked by one of our team. The other two companies that were as active as nearForm in supporting Node core were IBM and Microsoft, as the code is so important to so many different technologies and platform providers now.”
Within the Global Landscape
Along with training sessions and expert speakers, the conference will give guests the chance to experience the local culture – along with getting a glimpse of the role Node.js now plays in supporting global platforms.
As early champions and continued pioneers of this tech, nearForm are uniquely positioned to have a broad view of Node’s growing use.
“It’s a technology that is really great to use for web applications that handle a lot of traffic,” Paul explains.
“If you look at a company like Microsoft, they see it as a really important technology and are working hard to ensure that their systems like Azure will work well with cloud-based systems that run on Node.js.”
“The volume of people using it globally is absolutely huge. End users of platforms or brands like Netflix, PayPal, The New York Times, The New Yorker or Uber will never see it but it’s always running in the background to support these platforms.”
“So NodeConf EU is a chance to bring together this community of Node.js developers, architects and newcomers to Node to learn from each other and to talk about its use.”
“And for nearForm, it’s amazing to think that a company based in Tramore in County Waterford can be so influential on this technology – and that’s all down to Richard (Rodger) and Cian (Ó Maidín) identifying early on how important Node would be.”
